Treating Blackheads and Acne at the Root

by Valerie Garner

Blackheads are a common type of acne vulgaris typically found on the face and occurring in people at all ages. Blackheads, or medically known as open comedones, are non-inflamed pores characterized by wide apertures blocked by sebum and dead skin. Because these large openings allow air to access the follicle, the sebum-keratin mixture oxidizes, turning it black. Whiteheads, on the other hand, occur in follicles that have a smaller opening. As the plugged material inside is not accessible by air, it stays its whitish color.

Blackheads differ from other types of pimples in that they are usually very tiny and do not become inflamed. Blackheads can appear anywhere on the skin where there are pores or follicles. Dense follicle areas, like the face and arms, are where they are most likely to occur. Blackheads on occasion can progress into a harsh form of acne and acne scars.

How Do Blackheads and Other Phases of Acne Form?

Blackheads form through a similar process as other pimples. A sebaceous gland under control makes sebum, a natural oil, that flows through the sebaceous ducts to the skin's surface. However, sometimes this oil hardens or mixes with debris and/or skin cells and clogs the pore.

A blackhead officially becomes a blackhead when the plugged substance oxidizes, giving it its trademark black color. If this sebaceous canal is injured through sebum output or if inflammation arises, it is considered an acne lesion, or if very severe, an acne cyst.

The root cause of acne is damage to the cells along the sebum ducts. During periods of teen acne (puberty) or adult acne (most likely caused by stress), androgen levels are high, fueling sebum production and release. This increase in production also intensifies the rate at which sebum must be secreted, forcing it through the ducts that become damaged in return.

The type of sebum that the body produces also affects the healthy state of the follicle. If the body is deficient in linoleic acid, the glands make a harder oil that is more harsh on the cells lining the canal.

Furthermore, when the sebum becomes trapped below a keratin plug, it begins to accumulate, forcing the follicle to distend and become more irritated.

The body reacts, as it always does to any signals of peril, by ordering all available lymphocytes, macrophages and neutrophils to the site of injury. In the process of eating and destroying foreign bodies, these cells cause the inflammation manifested as acne. Severe cystic acne can therefore appear without infection. Should bacteria become involved, abscesses and scars follow.

Treating from the Inside: Acne and Blackhead Removal

In order to prevent the formation of blackheads, one needs to address acne from the inside in addition to the outside by managing sebum output and its state, plus excess levels of dead skin and bacteria.

Although exfoliation to clear away excess pore-clogging skin is suitable for blackhead treatment, it may irritate the skin and other lesions, causing inflammation and more acne problems. In order to treat acne, one must find an all-inclusive answer that can be used on all manifestations of acne, including blackheads, whiteheads, papules and pustules.

Most blackhead-specific as well as some acne treatments only focus on the un-clogging of pores. They use harsh chemicals like benzoyl peroxide that dry and cause free radicals that literally damage the skin to unblock clogged pores and eliminate follicle-plugging keratin.

Resolve acne worries by treating from the inside with a facial acne treatment that gets overactive sebaceous glands under control, naturally. Prescriptions that target sebum output have almost equally traumatizing side effects: worsened acne for an extended period of time, unbearably dry skin, chapped lips, nose bleeds, eye and eyelid irritation and severe birth defects.

An inhibitor of testosterone, the hormone most linked to sebum activity, licorice root is a natural solution. Once sebum manufacture and distribution is controlled, you prevent the primary cause of acne - damage and therefore inflammation to the sebaceous ducts.

Adequate consumption of linoleic acid will maintain sebum quality and keep it from becoming hard and abrasive to the skin.

Utilize the tricks of acne home remedies to stop the foremost causes of acne. Focus on the causes and not the symptoms.
